Knee Pain After a Fall or a Knock: What to Check
A slip on the stairs, a fall on the pavement or a knock against the edge of a table: the knee is often the first thing to hit the ground. In most cases, what is left is a bruise and a few sore days. Sometimes, however, a fall also injures a ligament, the meniscus or even a bone. This article helps you judge the situation, but it does not replace an examination. If you are unsure, it is always better to have the knee checked.
The first minutes after the fall
Do not jump up straight away. Stay seated for a moment, breathe and check how the knee feels. Then try to get up slowly, with support if possible. If the knee hurts but carries you, the following steps usually help in the first hours:
- rest the knee and avoid heavy activity for the rest of the day,
- cool the knee for short periods with a cold pack wrapped in a cloth, never with ice directly on the skin,
- raise the leg when you sit or lie down,
- clean any grazes and cover them with a clean dressing.
Many people find cold more pleasant than heat in the first day or two after a knock. You can read more in our article on heat or cold for knee pain.
What to check
Over the next few hours, pay attention to these questions:
- can you put weight on the leg and take a few steps without help?
- can you bend and straighten the knee fully, or does something block it?
- did the knee swell quickly, within an hour or two, or slowly over the day?
- does the knee feel unstable, as if it might give way?
- does it hurt at one exact point on the bone when you press it gently?
- did you hear or feel a pop at the moment of the fall?
Fast swelling, a pop, a knee that gives way or pain at one point on the bone are signs that you should not wait it out at home.
Go to the emergency department right away if
- the knee or leg looks deformed or out of place,
- you cannot put any weight on the leg at all,
- the knee is locked and you cannot straighten it,
- the foot is numb, cold or changes color,
- there is a deep or heavily bleeding wound,
- the pain is very strong and gets worse instead of better.
In older people, in people with osteoporosis and in people who take blood thinners, even a small fall deserves more caution. A bone can break more easily, and swelling can become larger.
See a doctor in the next few days if
The knee does not improve after a few days, the swelling stays, the knee catches or feels unstable, or the pain wakes you at night. These can be signs of an injury to a ligament or the meniscus that needs an examination. More about this is in our article on life after a knee ligament injury.
An ordinary bruise: what helps
If the doctor has ruled out a more serious injury, or the knock was clearly mild, recovery is usually simple. Rest from heavy loads for a few days, keep moving gently within the limits of pain and go back to your usual activities step by step. A bruise often changes color from blue and purple to green and yellow as it fades. If swelling remains, our article on the swollen knee explains possible causes.
Where a knee sleeve fits in
A knee sleeve is not a replacement for an examination after a fall, and it does not go over open grazes. Once a serious injury has been ruled out and the first swelling has settled, some people find that a soft sleeve gives pleasant warmth and a sense of support when they return to walking, stairs and sport. It does not heal the injury, but it can help the knee feel more secure in everyday life.
Frequently asked questions
When should I see a doctor after falling on my knee?
Go to the emergency department right away if you cannot put weight on the leg, the knee is locked, looks deformed or the foot is numb or cold. See a doctor in the next few days if the pain, swelling or a feeling of instability does not improve.
Should I use ice or heat after a knock to the knee?
In the first day or two, many people find short periods of cooling more pleasant, always with the cold pack wrapped in a cloth. Gentle warmth often feels better later, once the fresh swelling has settled.
Can I wear a knee sleeve after a fall?
Yes, once a serious injury has been ruled out, the first swelling has settled and there are no open wounds. A sleeve gives warmth and a sense of support, but it does not replace an examination.
A sleeve you will actually wear
The best sleeve is the one that does not end up in a drawer. The KeenTrove Bamboo Knee Sleeve is made for exactly that:
- soft, breathable bamboo, comfortable even in summer
- fits snugly but does not dig in behind the knee
- does not lock the knee, so you move naturally
- wear it under your clothes during the day and in bed at night
With 60 days to get your money back, you have nothing to lose.
Note: this article is for information only and does not replace an examination by a doctor. If you have circulation problems or diabetes, or have recently had knee surgery, talk to your doctor before wearing compression.
